The Christmas market on Nyhavn is one of the large traditional markets. The 18th Century Dutch houses lining the landmark harbour and the Christmas lights and decorations help set the mood for advent shopping.
There are over 25 stalls, offering a range of Christmas gifts including handblown glass from Bornholm and ceramics from Jutland - and of course the usual selection of yuletide knick-knacks such as Christmas decorations and jewellery.
There is a great atmosphere, with concerts on Sundays and typical Danish Christmas food (roasted almonds and apple slices). The large selection of restaurants on Nyhavn also provides the option for a little rest and recuperation amidst all the festivities.
Nyhavn Christmas market is traditional Danish feel and cosy atmosphere: perfect to get into the Christmas spirit in a colourful outdoor Copenhagen-landmark setting.

TIVOLI JULEMARKET

When:Open Mon-Thu 11.00-22.00, Fri 11.00-23.00, Sat-Sun 10.00-23.00

The Christmas market in Tivoli is also one of the larger markets on offer in Copenhagen, and is also a major tourist attraction. The novelty this year is an increase in the number of rides open in the winter season, with an elegant old-fashioned carrousel near the fountain. Many small shops sell traditional handicraft and other seasonal events take place alongside the market - such as a new snow machine in front of Nimb. As in Nyhavn, many of Tivoli's restaurants are open. Be warned it tends to get very crowded, even though the Christmas market area has been extended this year.

CHRISTIANIA JULEMARKET
Where: Den Grå Hal (The Grey Hall), Christiania, Cph Christianshavn
When: On 10- 20 December; Daily 10.00-20.00
How: Free admission
At the other end of the spectrum is the free state of Christiania's market. This is a more individual and alternative market, with some more 'off the wall' gifts. The atmosphere combines Christiania vibe and traditional julehygge - 'Alt om København' describes the Christiania market as reminiscent of a Turkish Bazaar.
This is the place to head for cheap, unique and almost certainly hand-made gifts, but beware it is also packed to the brim. Whether the pot-chai tea is still made on actual marijuana we have not proof-checked for a couple of years, but hippie rock bands, eco-pancakes and other alternative organic foods are most certainly still on offer for visitors.

GALOPBANEN JULEMARKET
Where: Klampenborgvej 52-56, Cph Klampenborg (25-30 minutes north of city)
When: On 3-5 December; Fri 14.00-20.00, Sat-Sun 10.00-18.00
How: Admission 50kr
Finally, a greatly contrasting market is being held at Galopbanen, Klampenborg (the horse racing track in the Dyrehave forest). One hundred new designers are exhibiting their best creations, ranging from jewellery and interior decor to Christmas decorations and clothing. This is sure to have a definite North-Copenhagen feel (the city's northern suburbs are the realm of the more affluent), but to ensure a little of the Christmas cheer, there will be pony riding and Christmas food. A more modern, upmarket take on the Danish Christmas market.
